Front and rear parking sensors make it possible to maneuver cars into tight parking spaces without problems. Even with modern cars, it is difficult to estimate the proximity to other cars, especially using backup cameras.
Parking sensors are small sensors that are installed into the front and rear bumpers of a car that emits ultrasonic waves and receive them back from objects nearby. These sonar waves are then transmitted to the car to let the driver know how close or far the owner’s car is from a nearby object.
Many new vehicles do come with sensors already factory-installed, but we can add them to most vehicles on the road today. The sensors typically mount in the front and rear bumpers, in holes cut with a special drill bit that allows for a precise fit. We typically spread the locations across the bumper area to make sure the entire area is covered, and at the correct height. We then run the sensor wires back to an area of the dash where the main control unit is mounted.
The system alerts the driver by emitting a tone, or beeping noise, when the car is close to the object. As the sensor gets closer to the object, the tone becomes louder and more rapid to let the driver know they need are getting closer to the object. There are also models that can give a visual display in addition to the audible tones.
